  • Essential Fats by Cheri A. Lynn
  •

Your body needs fats. Some are essential for optimum life function, while others are detrimental to your health. A simple rule of thumb is to avoid saturated fats, and learn the sources of good fats and bad fats. Processing, heat, and light can alter the chemical composition of fatty acids, making good fats turn bad. Some processing methods yield particularly bad fats called trans-fats. US food labels don't yet require identification of trans-fats -- read labels for indicators. Consumed in moderation, essential fatty acids optimize physical performance, improve cardiovascular and joint health, boost energy levels, and reduce bodyfat.

  • Evaluating the Quality of Common Protein Sources

The primary function of protein is to build and repair body tissues. "Biological Value" (BV) is the best determinant of how efficiently the human body uses protein. High BV whey isolates provide a superior source of protein. Select whey peptide blends. Avoid inferior whey protein concentrates (casein, soy isolate, denatured proteins). Look for the terms "whey protein isolate," "whey peptide blends," "ion-exchange," and "cross-flow membrane extraction." High BV whey protein improves cardiovascular health, maintains bone density or slows bone loss, maintains lean muscle mass, reduces stress, enhances mood, and boosts the immune system thus increasing resistance to various diseases and cancers. High BV whey protein isolate provides an important source of proteins for special populations, including pregnant women, children, people with digestive problems or lactose intolerance, vegetarians, the elderly, athletes and active people, and people on weight reduction programs.

  • Is Supplementation Beneficial? by Cheri A. Lynn

The concept of healthy nutrition continues to evolve. Vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants are now recognized as nutrients necessary to sustain human life. Research has shown that nutrient deficiency leads to declining health and eventually, disease. Getting all the essential nutrients may not be as easy as it seems as (1) RDIs may not be an accurate, up-to-date guide and (2) most foods have experienced significant nutrient loss by the time they reach our plates. Evidence suggests that supplementation can prevent or minimize oxidative damage associated with many diseases and the "aging" processes, including cancer, circulatory problems, osteoporosis, and arthritis. Findings like those mentioned in this article have led many physicians and nutritionists to recommend a daily multivitamin as a preventative measure.

  • Qualities of a First Class Trainer by Diana Vincent
  •

Personal training is an investment in you, so hire the best trainer you can find. Beyond credentials, look for experience that fulfills your needs. A good trainer focuses on your needs by listening to you, responding to your input, and accelerating your program as you progress. Before training begins, an overall fitness assessment helps prevent injury and allows concentration on your weaknesses and muscular imbalances. Training is all about you. Choose a trainer who thinks so, too.
