Weight-Loss programs Tax-Deductible

IRS rules that people diagnosed as obese can claim fees as medical expenses if they meet income standards

People diagnosed as obese will be able to claim a tax deduction for the cost of weight-loss programs associated with treating the disease, the IRS said. Tax experts said those seeking to use the deduction still will have to meet the income standards for claiming a medical deduction-meaning that not all taxpayers being treated for obesity will be able to qualify for the break.

Under the ruling, enrollment and monthly fees in weight-loss programs are deductible as medical expenses when the programs are being used to treat obesity. The ruling comes four months after the U.S. surgeon general called obesity a national epidemic, affecting roughly 34% of adults and 14% of children. A taxpayer who has been diagnosed with obesity can deduct the cost of the "diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention" of the disease. That should cover formal weight-loss programs like Weight Watchers (and Performance Fitness Concepts).

Getting a doctors diagnosis is important because the ruling does not allow the tax deduction for cosmetic reasons. The ruling excludes the deduction for the purchase of diet related food. The cost of weight-loss treatments may be added to other medical expenses. For more information please ask your tax advisor for details.

Common MYTHS

Each month, the staff at Performance Fitness Concepts will address a common myth regarding weight loss.

MYTH #1:  All Metabolisms Are Created Equal
The great majority of diet books operate as if this were true; however, all metabolisms are NOT created equal.   There are three basic and very different metabolic types - Fat and Protein efficient,  Carbohydrate Efficient; and the dual metabolism.  Identifying your metabolic type and eating accordingly  will decrease unwanted scale weight, increase your energy level and improve your health and well being. Understanding your metabolism is the cornerstone for a successful weight management program.

  • The Fat and Protein efficient makes up about 74% of the population and should eat 50% Protein, 25% Fat; and 25% carbohydrate.

  • The Carbohydrate efficient comprises about 23% of the population.  Ideally this type should consume 20% Protein, 12% fat, and 68% carbohydrates.

  • The people who are dual metabolism metabolize fats, proteins and carbohydrates with equal ease and their daily intake should be one third of each group.

How Lean Are You?
Did you know that the fitness staff at Performance Fitness Concepts can test your body composition? They are trained to measure your body composition and thereby determine your body fat percentage, lean body mass and your ideal overall weight.  Weighing yourself on a traditional scale does not identify what percentage of your weight is fat, muscle or water and it is important to know these measurements in order to set your goals and track your progress over time. Don't waist your time tracking your body weight, let our staff measure your body composition to find out your individual best weight that is right for you and your lifestyle.
